Islands Community Action Network (ICAN)

What is the ICAN?

The ICAN network is designed to inspire and empower communities to take climate action by connecting with other island groups and organisations. Members have access to a range of benefits including decarbonisation reference guides, local decarbonisation case studies and a project planning process, which details information to support turning ideas into practical action. Resources are arranged thematically around specific areas such as local food growing, waste, transport and energy.

Membership of the Island Community Action Network (ICAN) is open to any community organisation across Orkney, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides with an interest in decarbonisation and climate action.

Led by Community Energy Scotland, the role of ICAN is to ensure that the knowledge, experience, and expertise of island communities drives ICNZ activities and that communities are best equipped to respond and act as they face the climate emergency.

Community Resource Centres

As part of the ICAN a number of Community Resource Centres (CRCs) are hosted in existing community spaces in locations across Shetland, Orkney and the Outer Hebrides.

The centres provide physical resources, online access points and video conferencing equipment within existing community anchor buildings. Local organisations and community groups are welcome to get in touch with their local CRC listed below to make use of the facilities.

ICAN Online Resources

The ICAN online resources website provides clear information about the climate and nature crisis, guides to action that can be taken at a community level, and links to relevant sources of additional resource and expertise. It is being developed in collaboration with ICAN members, to capture learning from their lived experience and document place-based solutions and practical action, it will be regularly added to and updated. This is only accessible to ICAN members www.ican.icnz.org

Knowledge Sharing

To facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration as widely as possible across island communities ICAN members meet monthly online for themed presentations, discussion, updates from members, and news from the wider ICNZ project.

ICAN Members Forum

Alongside the monthly meetings the ICAN online forum space allows ongoing discussions, information sharing, and support between organisations across the network, with thematic subgroups, where member organisations working on similar projects and activities can share experiences and advice.
